When the warm weather and sunshine finally arrive, you know it’s summer time. While we may no longer get a true summer vacation like we did while we were in school, there’s still so much to look forward to. Whether you take some time off work and hit up the beach, gather with friends for barbecues, or just enjoy spending time in your garden, we’ll take any opportunity to get outside.
But all this time outside and in the sun can take a toll on your skin, and if it’s not protected, you run the risk of getting a sunburn. When summer rolls around, make sure you’re prepared to meet the heat head on with these essential products for summertime skincare.
Double Down on an SPF Product

At the top of your list of necessary skincare products for summertime has to be an effective SPF. Although it’s important to wear SPF daily, it is especially crucial to do this while you’re outside in the summer. After all, you’ve got to have an effective way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays! Make sure you’re applying SPF to not only your face, but any part of your body that will be exposed to the sun.
This means your neck, arms, shoulders, legs, and more if you’re laying out or planning to go swimming. Choose a product that goes on easily, and is at least SPF 30. This way you can be sure that your skin is protected while you’re out enjoying the warm summer weather!
We suggest: Andalou Naturals Brightening Vitamin C Beauty Balm. Not only is it SPF 30, it includes brightening vitamin C and a slight tint.
Choose a Lightweight Facial Cleanser

In the winter, it’s good to have a creamy facial cleanser with added moisturizers to help your skin stay hydrated. However, when we make the transition to warmer, more humid weather, you’ll want to make sure you switch to a summertime cleanser too. Choose a face wash that’s foaming, as opposed to creamy. You can still get the same hydration your skin needs, but in a less heavy way. Just because the temperatures are warmer, and the air is more humid, doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need moisture, it just may need a little less.
We suggest: AHC Aqualuronic Cleanser. Not only will this gentle wash cleanse your skin, it keeps it moisturized too.
Don’t Forget Your Serum
Make sure to use a serum that includes vitamin C
While a vitamin C serum is a good idea to use throughout the year, it is especially important in the summer. Along with a sunscreen, vitamin C works to protect your skin by preventing hyperpigmentation and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Too much sun exposure can lead to fine lines and wrinkles, but by including a vitamin C serum into your skincare routine, you can work to fight those off.
Vitamin C also works to brighten the appearance of your skin, giving you that healthy, glowing look. Along with SPF, you should make sure you’re including vitamin C in your daily skincare routine.
We suggest: Paula’s Choice Super Antioxidant Serum. This lightweight serum works to rehydrate your skin and rebalance uneven skin tone.
Make Sure Your Moisturizer is Light

Just as you use heavier, thicker moisturizers in the winter, you’ll want to lighten things up in the summer. Many moisturizers contain some SPF, which is great because by combining these two skincare steps, you’ll be putting less on your face and reducing your chances of a breakout.
Although the weather is warming, your skin still needs to be hydrated. After you cleanse, consider putting on a two in one moisturizer that also offers SPF protection. These lightweight moisturizers are easy to put on, and eliminate the need for another layer of product on your skin. This is good news for when you’re outside and working up a sweat under the sun. You won’t have to worry about clogged pores or the potential for a break out!
We suggest: Kinship Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturizing Sunscreen. This two in one moisturizer and sunscreen goes on easily and protects and hydrates your skin with the help of plant-based probiotics.
Use a Mask or a Peel
Don’t forget to show your skin some extra love with a mask or peel
One way to ensure your skin is getting the summer care it needs is to treat it with a mask or a peel regularly. Masks or peels are a great way to bring in some extra hydration, work to eliminate clog pores, or even get in a dose of exfoliation. Depending on the mask you choose, you may find that some are more drying than others. Don’t shy away from this part of your skincare routine, instead find a mask that offers hydrating ingredients such as shea butter or coconut oil.
Applying a mask or a peel once a week or once every two weeks shows your skin some much-needed TLC, and rejuvenates it in the process.
We suggest: Kaolin Clay Face Mask. This mask hydrates without feeling heavy with the help of olive powder and coconut powder.
Soothe Skin with Aloe
Treat irritated skin with soothing aloe
If you do happen to get a sunburn, don’t worry, you can lessen the discomfort with a cooling aloe gel. Aloe is gentle and works to help soothe your sunburned skin, reducing the pain of sunburn. You can use aloe anywhere you’ve unfortunately been burned, and it absorbs fast to cool reddened skin. Keep a bottle of aloe in the fridge to really up the cooling sensation when you apply!
We suggest: Sun Bum After Sun Cool Down Gel. A cooling gel to help lessen the discomfort caused by sunburn.
