What Is NightLase® — And How Does It Stop Snoring?

Snoring happens when the soft tissue at the back of the throat — the soft palate, uvula, and surrounding mucosa — is too relaxed during sleep. It partially collapses into the airway, causing the vibration you hear as snoring. In cases of obstructive sleep apnea, this tissue fully blocks the airway, causing repeated breathing interruptions throughout the night.

NightLase® uses Fotona Er:YAG laser energy to gently heat the mucosal tissue of the soft palate and oropharynx. The heat triggers a collagen remodeling response — tightening and firming the tissue so it's less likely to collapse during sleep. The airway stays more open. Snoring decreases. Breathing improves.

The treatment is performed entirely inside the mouth. No incisions, no devices to wear at night, no anesthesia. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a warm stone massage for the back of the throat.

NightLase® vs. CPAP vs. Other Snoring Solutions

There are several ways to address snoring and sleep apnea. Here's how they honestly compare — including what NightLase isn't right for.

CPAP / Traditional Options

  • CPAP — effective but many patients can't tolerate the mask
  • Oral appliances — helpful for mild cases, worn nightly
  • Surgery — effective but significant recovery and risk
  • Positional therapy — limited effectiveness for most
  • OTC strips/sprays — minimal clinical evidence

NightLase®

  • No mask, no device to wear at night
  • 3 in-office sessions — then nothing to do at home
  • Non-surgical, no incisions, no recovery
  • Treats the tissue directly, not just the symptoms
  • Can be combined with sleep appliances for stronger results

What the NightLase® Process Looks Like

Most patients complete the full course in about 6–8 weeks. Here's exactly what to expect.

1

Consultation & Sleep Assessment

Dr. Wakim evaluates your airway anatomy, reviews your symptoms, and discusses your sleep history. If you haven't had a formal sleep study, she may recommend a home sleep test (NightOwl) to confirm the severity of your sleep-disordered breathing before treatment begins.

Session 1

The Fotona laser handpiece is used intraorally to deliver gentle pulses of laser energy to the soft palate and surrounding tissue. The sensation is a comfortable warmth — most patients compare it to a hot stone massage at the back of the throat. No anesthesia needed. You leave immediately after.

Sessions 2 & 3

Two more sessions spaced 3 weeks apart complete the standard course. Each session builds on the collagen remodeling initiated by the previous one. Many patients and their partners notice snoring improvement after the first or second session.

Results & Maintenance

Results typically last 12–18 months as the tightened tissue gradually relaxes over time. A single annual or biannual maintenance session preserves the improvement. Many patients schedule their NightLase maintenance around their regular dental cleanings.

Annual maintenance recommended
💧 Pre-Treatment Tip from Dr. Wakim

Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your treatment — aim for half your body weight in ounces. (Example: 200 lbs → 100 oz → about 13 cups.) Well-hydrated tissue responds better to laser treatment and tends to be more comfortable during the session.

NightLase® Questions We Hear Most

No — and this surprises most patients. The laser energy feels like a warm, gentle pulse at the back of the throat. Most people describe it as similar to a hot stone massage. No anesthesia is required. You can eat, drink, and talk normally immediately after. There's no soreness afterward in the vast majority of cases.
Many patients — and their partners — notice a reduction in snoring after the first or second session. The full effect develops over the course of all three sessions and the weeks following, as the collagen remodeling matures. Results continue to improve for several weeks after your final treatment.
Not necessarily for snoring without suspected sleep apnea. But if you have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea — waking up gasping, excessive daytime sleepiness, observed breathing pauses — Dr. Wakim may recommend a home sleep test first to confirm severity. This matters because severe OSA requires different treatment, and we want to make sure NightLase is the right fit before you invest in it. We offer home sleep testing in-office for convenience.
Yes — some patients use NightLase alongside CPAP to improve tissue tone, and then reassess whether CPAP pressure can be reduced following treatment. Any changes to CPAP settings should be made with guidance from your sleep physician. Dr. Wakim will coordinate with your care team as needed.
Results typically last 12–18 months. As with any collagen-based treatment, the tissue gradually relaxes over time as the body's natural aging process continues. A single maintenance session annually or every 18 months preserves the results. Many patients schedule it alongside their regular dental cleanings for convenience.
Currently NightLase® is not covered by dental or medical insurance as it's classified as an elective laser procedure. However, if your treatment plan also includes a home sleep test or oral sleep appliance, those components may qualify for coverage under medical insurance. We'll review your specific benefits and help you understand what's applicable before you commit to anything.
