Why Preventative Care Is the Most Important Thing We Do

Most major dental problems — root canals, crowns, extractions, implants — start as something small that didn't get caught in time. A cavity that gets cleaned every six months is a $200 filling. The same cavity ignored for two years can become a $2,000 crown or worse.

Preventative dentistry is the whole point. Regular cleanings remove the calculus buildup your toothbrush can't touch. Comprehensive exams catch decay, gum disease, cracked teeth, and oral cancer early — when treatment is simple and outcomes are good. Fluoride and sealants add an extra layer of protection for patients who need it.

Dr. Wakim's approach to preventative care goes beyond a standard cleaning. Every visit includes a full assessment of your gum health, bite, and soft tissue — not just a polish and send-you-home. If something's changing, you'll know about it before it becomes a problem.

Preventative dentistry protects you from:

  • Cavities and decay
  • Gum disease and bone loss
  • Oral cancer going undetected
  • Cracked or failing teeth
  • TMJ problems and bite issues
  • Costly emergency treatments
  • Premature tooth loss
  • Systemic health complications linked to gum disease

🦷

Dental Cleaning

Professional prophylaxis removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can't reach. Most patients need a cleaning every six months. Some with gum disease history need more frequent visits — we'll tell you which applies to you.

Comprehensive Exam

A thorough exam goes well beyond checking for cavities. Dr. Wakim evaluates your gum health, bite, jaw function, existing restorations, and soft tissue. New patients get a full baseline; existing patients get a complete reassessment annually.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer has a 90%+ survival rate when caught early — and under 30% when caught late. Dr. Wakim uses fluorescence technology (OralID) to detect abnormal tissue invisible to the naked eye. Included at every comprehensive exam.

Fluoride Treatment

Professional fluoride treatments strengthen enamel and make teeth more resistant to acid attacks from food and bacteria. Especially valuable for children, patients with dry mouth, and anyone with a history of frequent cavities.

Preventative Dentistry Questions We Hear Most

For most healthy adults, every six months is the standard — and it's not arbitrary. That's approximately how long it takes for plaque to mineralize into tartar in most mouths. If you have a history of gum disease, are prone to rapid buildup, or have certain systemic health conditions, Dr. Wakim may recommend every 3–4 months. We'll tell you what makes sense for your specific situation.
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above the gumline and is maintenance for healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes below the gumline to remove buildup from the root surfaces of teeth — it's a treatment for gum disease, not routine maintenance. If Dr. Wakim recommends a deep cleaning, it means gum disease is present and needs to be addressed. See our Scaling & Root Planing page for more detail.
Plan for about 90 minutes for a new patient visit — that includes full-mouth X-rays, a comprehensive exam, and a cleaning. Returning patients typically finish in about an hour. We don't rush appointments, and we'd rather spend the time to do it right than rush through and miss something.
Yes — and it takes about 2 minutes. Oral cancer is one of the few cancers with a dramatically different survival rate depending on when it's caught. The 5-year survival rate is over 90% when found early, and under 30% when found late. Most early-stage oral cancer has no symptoms the patient notices. The OralID fluorescence screening we do at every comprehensive exam is the fastest, most reliable way to catch it before it becomes serious.
No. New patients get a full-mouth X-ray series to establish a baseline. After that, frequency depends on your individual oral health — typically every 12 months for low-risk patients, every 6 months for patients with active concerns. Our digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than older film technology, so you're getting more accurate images with less exposure.
You're not alone — and you won't be judged. A lot of patients come in after years away, and the first step is always just figuring out where things stand. Dr. Wakim will do a thorough assessment, explain what she finds, and give you options — prioritized by what actually needs attention first. The goal is to get you back to a healthy baseline as efficiently and affordably as possible.
