What Is Fotona Laser Dentistry? The Technology We Use That Most Practices Don’t
Dr. Liza Wakim explains Fotona laser treatments — SmoothLase, LipLase, NeckLase, and NightLase — what they do, who they’re for, and why most practices don’t offer them.
When patients come to Enhanced Wellness for the first time, they sometimes notice the Fotona laser system and ask what it’s for. The honest answer takes a few minutes to explain — because Fotona isn’t a single treatment. It’s a platform that makes possible an entire category of procedures that most dental and aesthetic practices in this region simply don’t offer.
I invested in Fotona technology because it fills genuine gaps in what I could offer patients. There are things Fotona does that no other tool in my practice can do — non-surgical tissue treatments, sleep and airway interventions, facial aesthetic procedures — and patients who’ve benefited from them often tell me they had no idea this kind of treatment existed, let alone that it was available at a dental practice.
So let me explain what it is, what it does, and who it’s actually for.
What Fotona is
Fotona is a dual-wavelength laser system used in both dental and aesthetic medicine. The two wavelengths — Er:YAG and Nd:YAG — work differently and penetrate tissue at different depths, which is what allows the system to be used across such a wide range of applications. The Er:YAG wavelength works precisely at the surface and in hard tissue; the Nd:YAG penetrates deeper into soft tissue to stimulate collagen production and tighten tissue from within.
That combination — surface precision plus deep tissue stimulation — is what makes Fotona genuinely different from standard dental lasers, which typically offer only one wavelength and a much narrower range of applications.
In practical terms, Fotona allows me to perform procedures that previously required surgery, injectables, or referral to a specialist — non-invasively, in the dental chair, with no incisions and minimal downtime.
All four treatments are available at Enhanced Wellness in Washington, PA. Results develop gradually over 6–8 weeks as collagen remodels.
The treatments we offer with Fotona
SmoothLase — non-surgical facial rejuvenation
SmoothLase is an intraoral laser treatment — meaning it’s delivered from inside the mouth — that stimulates collagen production in the skin around the lower face, particularly the perioral area around the lips and the nasolabial folds. As collagen remodels over the weeks following treatment, patients notice a smoothing and tightening effect in the skin around the mouth — reduced fine lines, improved skin laxity, a subtle lifting effect — without injections, without surgery, and without any recovery time.
For patients who are interested in facial rejuvenation but aren’t ready for injectables or want a more gradual, natural-looking result, SmoothLase is a genuinely useful option. It’s also complementary to Botox and filler for patients who do both — the collagen stimulation from SmoothLase adds a dimension of skin quality improvement that injectables alone don’t address.
Results develop gradually over six to eight weeks as collagen remodels, and a series of treatments is typically recommended for optimal results.
LipLase — non-surgical lip enhancement
LipLase uses the same collagen-stimulating laser energy to enhance the lips — increasing volume, improving definition, and reducing fine lines around the lip border — without filler. The treatment works by stimulating the body’s own collagen production within the lip tissue, producing a natural-looking plumpness that develops progressively rather than immediately.
For patients who want subtle lip enhancement without the look or maintenance of filler — or who have had filler in the past and want a more natural alternative — LipLase is an option worth knowing about. Results are softer and more gradual than filler, which is exactly what some patients prefer.
NeckLase — non-surgical neck tightening
NeckLase applies Fotona laser energy to the neck and jawline area to stimulate collagen and improve skin laxity. The neck is one of the earliest areas to show visible aging — loose or crepey skin, loss of definition at the jawline — and it’s an area that’s often undertreated because the non-surgical options have historically been limited.
NeckLase offers a non-invasive option for patients who want to address neck laxity without surgery. As with the other Fotona aesthetic treatments, results develop gradually as collagen remodels over several weeks, and a series of sessions produces the best outcome.
NightLase — laser treatment for snoring and sleep quality
NightLase is the Fotona treatment I find myself explaining most often to patients who’ve never considered that a dentist might be able to help with their sleep. It uses laser energy to gently heat and tighten the tissue of the soft palate and the back of the throat — the tissue that relaxes during sleep and, in many people, contributes to snoring and mild to moderate sleep-disordered breathing.
The treatment is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and involves no devices to wear during sleep. A series of three sessions, spaced roughly a month apart, produces tightening in the soft palate tissue that most patients notice as a meaningful reduction in snoring — confirmed frequently by their partners as much as by themselves.
NightLase is not a treatment for severe obstructive sleep apnea, and I’m clear with patients about that distinction. For patients with diagnosed OSA, proper medical management — including CPAP or a dental sleep device — remains the appropriate path. But for patients whose primary concern is snoring or mild airway restriction that’s affecting their sleep quality, NightLase offers something most practices can’t: a non-surgical, non-device option with a real track record.
Who these treatments are for
The Fotona treatments I offer sit at the intersection of dentistry and facial aesthetics — which is exactly why they’re available in a dental practice rather than a separate med spa or surgical center. I’m already working in and around the face and mouth; the dental chair is a natural environment for these treatments, and my training through the Fotona certification protocols ensures I understand how to apply the technology appropriately.
Broadly, these treatments tend to appeal to patients who:
- Are interested in facial rejuvenation but prefer non-surgical, non-injectable options
- Want to address signs of aging around the mouth, lips, or neck without significant downtime
- Are dealing with snoring or mild sleep disruption and want an alternative to devices or surgery
- Are already patients at Enhanced Wellness for dental care and want to address aesthetic concerns in the same trusted environment
They’re not right for everyone, and I don’t position them as a replacement for more intensive interventions when those are genuinely warranted. But for the right patient, they offer meaningful results that weren’t accessible without surgery or referral not long ago.
What to expect from a Fotona treatment
All four treatments share some common characteristics: they’re performed in the office with no general anesthesia, they involve no incisions, and they require little to no downtime afterward. The laser energy produces a warming sensation during treatment that most patients find tolerable — not painless, but far more comfortable than anything surgical.
Results develop gradually. Because these treatments work by stimulating the body’s own collagen production and tissue remodeling, the change isn’t immediate — it unfolds over weeks, which is also why results tend to look natural rather than sudden. Multiple sessions are typically recommended, and a maintenance session once or twice a year helps sustain results over time.
If you’re curious about any of these treatments and want to understand whether you’re a candidate, the best starting point is a consultation where I can assess your specific concerns and explain what’s realistic to expect.
Why most practices don’t offer this
Fotona technology represents a significant investment — in the equipment itself and in the training required to use it well across its full range of applications. Most dental practices, understandably, focus on core dental procedures and don’t take on the additional scope that a system like Fotona requires.
I made the investment because I believe dentistry done well is about more than teeth. The face, the airway, the skin — these are all connected, and a practice that can address them together offers something genuinely different from one that can’t. That’s the version of dentistry I want to practice, and Fotona is a meaningful part of how I do it.
